What is the Thermage Procedure?

The Thermage Procedure is an advanced way of tightening skin that requires only the touch of a sophisticated treatment tip to your skin. It is performed with an advanced radiofrequency device called ThermaCool TC and requires no incisions or recovery time. It allows the physician to treat aging and sun-damaged skin by delivering deep intense heat without harming the epidermis (skin surface).

The Thermage Procedure uses safe radiofrequency energy to penetrate the top layer of skin and create a volumetric  and uniform heating effect to the deep dermis. It reduces wrinkles and achieves brow lifting by skin tissue tightening caused by immediate collagen contraction followed by gradual collagen tightening. The result is a more youthful appearance to previously lax and sagging skin.

Where on the face is Thermage performed?

Even small amounts of skin tightening in certain key areas can be advantageous for significant cosmetic improvement. For example treating the skin of the forehead can lift the eyebrows and enhance the appearance of the eyes, making the eyes look more open, alert and less tired. Previously, this result could only be obtained with major surgery. Additional applications to treat other body areas are being investigated.

Is Thermage painful?

Each time the ThermaCool TC device is pulsed there is a brief sensation of intense heat in the skin. The ThermaCool device monitors the surface temperature of the skin and applies a cooling cryogen spray, which is delivered before, during and after the application of heat.

Is it safe?

The Thermage Procedure is very safe. Although it is possible that skin damage can occur, this advanced treatment has been studied carefully in hundreds of patients with minimal reports of lasting adverse effects.

How long does it take?

The Thermage Procedure can takes an hour or so, depending of the size of the area being treated. Additional time may be required for skin preparation prior to the procedure.

Is there any special preparation or follow-up regime?

No. Unlike major invasive surgery, there is no need to interrupt any medications or to do any fasting the day before Thermage treatment. You can return to normal activities immediately following the procedure. Some patients exhibit a temporary redness of superficial blistering for a few hours after treatment but there is usually no swelling or bruising.

When will I see results?

Recently published studies conducted by Thermage show that measurable tightening improvements appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after a single treatment session. However, many patients report seeing an earlier response.

How many treatments will I need?

A single treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients. However, your doctor will assess the number and frequency of treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin.

How long will the effects of the Thermage Procedure last?

The Thermage Procedure causes an immediate tightening of the collagen structure with additional tightening over time. Unpublished reports by experienced physicians indicate that results may last 18 months or longer based on the patientís natural aging process.

How long before I can return to my normal activities?

Most people return to their regular activities immediately following the Thermage procedure. Some people experience mild redness (like a sunburn), but it usually disappears quickly. There is no special care needed after treatment, but sunscreen is recommended as a part of good skin care.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a building block that supports the structure of the skin. Over time, collagen becomes depleted or damaged by the sun or other environmental factors. The results are visible signs of aging, such as loose skin and wrinkles.
